The success of this franchise has spawned several video games, a comic book series, novelizations, two (soon to be three) Hollywood action films, and a variety of action figures. While the games mostly adhere to a consistent storyline, there are enough deviations from the game plot within the films and novels to be considered alternate story lines.

Books

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy,

was written by author S.D. Perry as the first book in her series of Resident Evil novels. The novel combines Jill's and Chris scenarios into one narrative and features all five of the main characters (including Barry and Rebecca).

The book also takes liberty with the original source materials; the most notable difference being the inclusion of an original character named Trent, an insider from Umbrella who provides Jill with information about the mansion prior to the events of the mansion incident. Since the book was written a few years before the GameCube remake, the novelization ommits the presence of Lisa Trevor in the mansion. However, the book does allude to the original version of George Trevor's Journal from The True Story Behind Biohazard, as well as the short story it contained Biohazard: The Beginning, which involved the dissappearance of Chris Redfield's friend, Billy Rabbitson.

Resident Evil: Caliban Cove

In the aftermath of their ordeal through the Umbrella Corporation's genetic research facility, the surviving members of the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Squad) attempt to warn the world about the conspiracy to create terrifying biological weapons. But the conspiracy is far from dead, as the S.T.A.R.S. learn when they are declared outlaws by the very people who trained them. Forced to go underground, the S.T.A.R.S. resolve to battle the conspiracy on their own, determined to seek out and stop Umbrella's experiments wherever they may be.

Combat, medic, and biochemist Rebecca Chambers, the sole survivor of Bravo Team, joins a new S.T.A.R.S. strike force when rumor comes of another Umbrella experiment: hidden beneath the rocky cliffs of Caliban Cove, Maine, someone is building an army of the undead. Within a sinister lighthouse, through a complex maze of sea caves, inside the shell of a sunken shipwreck, the S.T.A.R.S. must battle more unspeakable horrors and stop a madman from unleashing the biohazard upon the world.

Resident Evil: City of the Dead

was written by author S.D. Perry, as the third book in her series of Resident Evil novels. The narrative is based on the Leon A/Claire B scenario, with Leon fighting the mutated Birkin for most of the story, while Claire fights the Tyrant (Mr.X). The book downplays most of the puzzle-solving from the game and focuses more on the interaction between the characters. There are also added scenes in the book involving the supporting characters such as Ada, Annette and Chief Irons.

The book was written before the release of Resident Evil 3 and a lot of the information in the novelization have since been contradicted. The beginning of the book for example, implies that Jill went to Europe together with Chris and Barry. However, this is not the case in Resident Evil 3. In the novel, it is established Ada is working with Trent (and not Wesker, as it was later documented in Wesker's Report), a recurring character in Perry's novels. The end of the novel features Leon, Claire and Sherry being retrieved by Rebecca Chambers and her comrades from the Maine branch of S.T.A.R.S. (following the events of Resident Evil: Caliban Cove), leading to the events of Resident Evil: Underworld. However, Resident Evil 3 reveals that Claire and Leon parted ways, with Leon and Sherry being picked up by the military prior to the nuclear destruction of Raccoon City, while Claire continued her search for Chris by herself.

Resident Evil: Underworld

Abandon hope, all ye who enter here...

Umbrella has secrets. The mysterious corporation is creating monstrous biological killing machines for the highest bidder. But Umbrella has enemies, too—chief among them a contingent of rogue S.T.A.R.S., former members of the paramilitary response unit Umbrella helped create.

Umbrella has secrets. Despite its vast power, the company has begun to lose control of its hidden research facilities, bit by bit, one lab at a time. Three labs have already been destroyed, their work lost, setbacks due in no small part to the meddlesome S.T.A.R.S. and their allies.

Umbrella has secrets. Beneath the deserts of the American Southwest, on of the company's most elaborate facilities is about to go online. Somewhere inside may also be the key to stopping Umbrella once and for all... if Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Rebecca Chambers, and their friends can get past a strike team of corrupt S.T.A.R.S., and survive the genetically engineered horrors awaiting them below the sun-scorched Earth.

Umbrella has secrets. And one man with an agenda of his own knows them all...

Nemesis

was the fifth book in her series of Resident Evil novels. The novelization stays true to the game's outline in most respects, although the author choose to ignore some of discrepancies between the game and her previous novels, such as Jill's decision to stay in Raccoon City (instead of going to Europe like she did in City of the Dead) and the destruction of Raccoon City at the end of the story. One discrepancy that is explained in the book is the sudden existence of Raccoon's Mayor Warren. In the novel, it is explained that Mayor Warren is the former mayor, whereas Mayor Harris is the current mayor in Perry's series.

However, like Perry's novelizations, there are additional new materials and scenes not depicted in the game, as well as a few differences. The recurring novel-only character of Trent (a Perry original) befriends Carlos prior to his mission in Raccoon and provides him with information before setting off. The novel also suggest that Nicholai intended to kill Mikhail out of jealousy for outranking him and the injury Mikhail suffered was because of him. In the game, Jill and Carlos decides to leave Uptown through the cable car without Nicholai, believing that he died in a zombie attack, whereas in the book, they become aware of Nicholai's treacherous nature beforehand and decide to leave the city without him. The character of Murphy Seeker is missing in the novelization, although a new character named Randy Thomas serves a similar role in the novel. Tyrell Patrick (one of the Supervisors or Watchdogs, as they're referred in the novel) is renamed Ken Franklin and his backstory differs greatly from the official one.

The novelization ends the story with Nicholai getting killed by the Nemesis, while Carlos and Jill escape from the city without outside help. This is only one of three possible outcomes in the game.

Code: Veronica

was the sixth book in her series of Resident Evil novelizations. The novelization was based on the original version of Code: Veronica and written before the X edition of the game. As a result, the added scenes where Wesker confronts Claire in front of the Palace and the final fight sequence between Chris and Wesker are not just ignored in the book, but contradicted as well; in the former case, Wesker behaves as if he never seen Claire before when first encounters Chris; in the latter case, Wesker is unaware that Chris and Claire escaped from the Antarctic Facility, nor does he recover Steve's body as a specimen.

The end of the novel reveals that Wesker acquired his new job at the Organization due to Trent's manipulations, similar to the revelation that Ada Wong worked for Trent in City of the Dead. This was before the release of Wesker's Report, which ironically featured a similar revelation that tied Ada with Wesker and the same Organization (see above). When seen in context with Wesker's Report and the more recent games in the series, this would lead readers to believe that Trent is also a member of the same organization (regardless of Perry's original intentions).
